Barry Zweig

Criminal Division Lead Attorney

A New Jersey native, Barry received his education at the University of Vermont where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1989 and the University of San Diego School of Law, from which he graduated in 1995. After law school graduation, he relocated to Virgina where he has been a licensed attorney for 29 years. He started his career as an Assistant Public Defender in Loudoun County defending clients charged with every type of crime. He left Loudoun County to represent the Department of Social Services as a member of the Prince William County Attorney’s Office prosecuting child abuse and neglect cases. After a year and a half, Barry transitioned to private practice and engaged in a general practice of law, with a focus on complex criminal litigation. His civil case load included family law, contract disputes, and unlawful detainer cases on the civil side. During this time he served the courts as a Guardian ad litem, representing children and protecting their best interests. On the criminal side, Barry handled nearly every type of case, primarily handling serious violent crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated malicious wounding cases.

In 2017, Barry became a prosecutor working for the Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. He remained a Commonwealth’s Attorney for the next eight years, becoming a Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney for Loudoun County and then Fairfax County. In Loudoun County, he served as the Acting Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney, supervisor of the Violent Crimes Unit and Special Victim’s Units and was the director of the Loudoun County Victim Witness Program. As a Commonwealth’s Attorney, Barry prosecuted the most complex and violent crimes, with a focus on murder cases.

Throughout his career, Barry has devoted himself to serving the community. As a lawyer, he was member of the Prince William County Bar Association Board of Directors and served as the president of that organization. He has been recognized as the Prince William County General District Court Court Appointed Attorney of the Year and Trial Attorney of the Year. He has been a Faculty Member of the Virginia State Bar Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course and currently teaches Advanced Trial Advocacy at the George Mason University School of Law. Barry is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Prince William County Bar Association, Virginia Criminal Defense Attorney’s Association, and Fairfax County Bar Association.

In his free time, Barry is an avid hockey and lacrosse fan. He Barry has coached youth ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, and he continues to play both ice hockey and lacrosse competitively in men’s leagues.
